US Department of Homeland Security Funds Half a Dozen Blockchain Research Projects

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) today announced a total of $3.1 million in competitive research awards for 29 small businesses located across 12 states, and Washington, D.C.

Each business was awarded approximately $100,000 in preliminary funding through DHS S&T’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Thirty-one contracts were awarded in 10 topic areas including Blockchain:

The solicitation, released in December 2015, included the above topics developed by S&T program managers to address the research and development needs of DHS components and the greater homeland security enterprise. Small businesses may be eligible for further development funding from their initial project results, as well as the scientific and technical merit and perceived commercialization potential moving forward into development.

Initiated in 2004, the DHS S&T SBIR Program is a competitive contract awards program to increase the participation of innovative and creative U.S. small businesses in federal research and development initiatives and to increase private sector commercialization of SBIR-funded solutions.

Kastelein has an Honorary Ph.D. and is Chair Professor of Blockchain at China's first blockchain University in Nanchang at the Jiangxi Ahead Institute software and Technology. He has over a half a decade experience judging and rewarding some 1000+ innovation projects as an EU expert for the European Commission's SME Instrument programme as a startup assessor and as a startup judge for the UK government's Innovate UK division. Kastelein has spoken (keynotes & panels) on Blockchain technology at over 50 events in 30+ cities.
